About Newport & Location of "Beacon Rock"
Beacon Rock is half hour car ride from TF Green Airport in Providence, Rhode Island and ten minute drive from the local airport.
The home is located in the Ocean Drive District, which bounds the City of Newport from its southeastern to its southwestern extremities. This avenue extends circuitously for distance of about 8 miles beginning at the south end of Bellevue Avenue and terminating at Fort Adams, across the cove from Beacon Rock.
Winding Ocean Avenue is bounded by stretches of beaches, promontories and Jetty-like rock formations. As one drives along numerous ocean inlets, cliffs, a variety of low land fresh water ponds and cliffs with high slopes and scrubs can be seen. On either side of this way, and erected over the past 100 years, are also sparsely spaced and sometimes intentionally hidden, a procession of sizable summer residences, displaying a variety of architectural and landscape styles.
The Ocean Drive District has a character that contrasts sharply with the great houses on Bellevue Avenue- there are rolling green hills, rocky cliffs, pastures and houses ranging from Eidlitz's Swiss Chalet of 1854, directly across the street from Beacon Rock, to Castle Hill overlooking the Atlantic. The houses of the area are much more private than the insular Bellevue Avenue and represent a different age and spirit.
The area also contains the early farms, including Hammersmith Farm, where Jackie Kennedy-Onassis was raised, French Chateaux by Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson Beech Bound an English Tutor on a grand scale, Bonniecrest by John Russell Pope and Harbor Court, the former summer home of John Nicholas Brown, former New York Yacht Club Commodore, founder of Brown University and currently the Newport home of the New York Yacht Club.
The home is five minutes from downtown Newport offering fine shopping, dinning and entertainment.
Newport is world renowned for sailing and is considered the sailing capital of the United States with outstanding sailing and yachting facilities. In addition, Newport has numerous additional recreational facilities and private clubs including the Newport County Club, New York Yacht Club, Newport Tennis Casino, Newport Jai Lai and numerous parks.
